Last Quarter's EventS

-----------------------

Like every summer since 1982, the EEP welcomed prospective students to campus beginning on the first day of instruction, June 19th 2006. These fantastic young gifted students and the EEP Mentor Teams participated in the Friday Orientation meetings on June 23rd, July 7th the 14th. All the applicants seemed very enthusiastic about the Provisional Summer process as well as the possibility of joining the EEP.

The 32nd Annual CSLA Staff Awards ceremony was held on June 15th in the Golden Eagle Ballroom where for the second straight year the EEP Director Richard Maddox was nominated for the CSLA Staff Member of the Year award. He told us that it was a great honor to be selected by his University peers for this distinction. Unfortunately, he was not able to steal the award from Mr. David Linnevers, a strong EEP advocate and director of outreach and recruiting for our nationally acclaimed College of ECS&T. Congratulations Mr. Linnevers for winning CSULA Staff Member of the Year!!!

On July 9th the EEP Director attended the Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG) Conference in San Diego. He was privileged to be chosen as one of the featured presenters for the event and the EEP seemed to get a great deal of positive feedback from the parents and teachers in attendance. The topic he discussed centered on the positive aspects of acceleration at the collegiate level and the importance of considering student’s emotional needs, developmental stage and parental involvement.

Throughout the quarter, June to August, the Ladies of EEP (LEEP) held weekly Bake Sales on Thursdays 10:00am-12:00pm in the EEP Kitchen. With flair and creative cynicism these generous and thoughtful female EEPsters donned the aprons of yesteryear to bake and serve delicious treats to their fellow classmates. All proceeds go toward the LEEP Feed the Homeless Crusade, a wonderful effort where the LEEP prepares brown-bag lunches for distribution to homeless unfortunates in L.A. Go LEEP!!

EEP Club Transition Meeting was on July 18th. This meeting between the previous and incoming EEPC Boards was designed to share experiences and advice meant to best prepare members of the new board to serve their constituents. It is also a celebration of thanks for the hard work and dedication of the last year’s board members. Thank you EEPC 2005-2006 and welcome EEPC 2006-2007!

The first annual Mentor-Provie Coloring Contest was held during Weeks #6-8 of the Summer quarter, July 24th to August 4th. Each Mentor-Provie team was asked to create a picture illustrating their summer quarter experience. Such a display of artistic flair has rarely been seen in these parts! Winners noted in Announcements!

The annual Mentor-Provie water balloon fight was held after the last Friday Orientation on July 14th. Luckily, none of our beloved students were harmed by either water or balloon, but they did all have a great time!!! Temperature in downtown L.A was 95° so we assume this traditional summertime ritual was a welcome relief. All students were welcome to join in the fun and it was a great bonding opportunity for all.

EEPC Bowling Night took place on Friday, July 28th from 7:00 to 11:00pm. This is the only EEPC summer event and they welcomed both Regulars and Provies for a night of fun at the Bahama Lanes in Pasadena. Everyone knows that bowling and the highly gifted go together like test tubes and chemicals, like Shakespeare and swordplay. A perfect and time tested match plus a great way to have fun blow off steam before midterms!

There was a photo shoot in the University Library for all EEPsters on Wednesday, August 9th. University Librarian Dr. Alan Stein asked for EEPster presence in one of their mutually favorite places, the library, for the new JFK Library brochure. Special thanks to those EEPsters who attended.

Catalina'06, the annual end-of-the-year and welcome-new-freshmen event sponsored by the wonderful PEEP, was a blast, again! A pack of fun-loving EEPsters new and old, numbering 100 lasted through a terrific weekend of camping, sunning, exercising and water sport, from Thursday September 7th to Sunday the 10th. As usual, this trip consists of lots of bonding and merriment for returning EEP students and our new EEP Freshman Class and it is a great way for EEPsters to enjoy the last few days of Summer while giving their parents a nice week-end off too!

PEEP volunteers are needed to help with the PEEP General Meeting and WPC Testing! The PEEP welcomes your involvement at all levels of the organization. The next WPC testing will be December 3rd 2006 so please mark your calendars. Please get as involved in the PEEP as you can! We appreciate your partnership and help! The PEEP is preparing this year’s annual fundraiser event and will likely include some great long term funding objectives including staff and space needs. Be on the lookout for the mailings and e-mails regarding this years funding drive!

Some of the great things your PEEP will provide to all students of the EEP this fall include: New game-room table and chairs, student computer lab supplies including copier ink and toner, a juice machine for the kitchen, quarterly cleaning services, new living room sofa, DVD storage, new cubby area backpack storage system, new video camera, new security system, EEPC general support and much, much more all with your help! We thank you in advance for your contributions this year’s fundraiser!

The EEPC would like to announce that they have a large archive of television shows and movies for EEPster use. We hope to have a new DVD storage cabinet in place in the fall and we will place different movies out each month and students may request a DVD as well. More at group meetings in fall.

The EEP Director was highlighted in CSLA’s Science and Engineering and Mathematics SEM-Ed June newsletter. The article praises him for his hard work and dedication to the Early Entrance Program and recognizes EEPsters as an exceptional group of students who go on to be successful adults. The Director noted be was very flattered that they would spend so much type-space for him and thanked SEM editor Mrs. Evelyn Winchester for all her hard work in supporting SEM students.

NEWS & NOTICES

-----------------------

I always liked Fall when I was a student and I still do! A new year of transitions, new faces and a newly energized student body; school in September is still pretty exciting stuff! Freshmen are often awe struck, sophomores think they know it all, juniors know they know it all and all the Elders are too busy preparing for graduation, grad school and life to care about what they know or don’t know!

I look forward to seeing all the EEP students engage in student-life and to a new EEPC administration to lead our high-achieving group of young scholars. Fun and rewarding work is ahead so I’ll try extra hard to make the following brief. Here we go and thanks for your help and involvement!

-----------------------

CHEERS & JEERS

-----------------------

Cheers to a new EEPC board that seems very eager to make their mark on the program by helping their constituents, the EEP students. I noticed the President Ms. Pam L. leading a group of her Officers in work during the break week prepping the lounge. This is the type of involvement, sacrifice and hands-on work will endear them to the masses and the adults so keep up the good work 2006-2007 EEPC Officers!

Cheers to Mr. Fenton for donating a juice machine to the EEP Club for our student use! This will be a great opportunity for them to take responsibility for a project while serving their students. Donations of healthy beverages like juice and green tea (cans only) are most welcome!

Cheers to Mrs. Hay for her hard work in keeping the PEEP Newsletter and PR machine active and a huge thanks to Mrs. Kadison for providing for all of our lounge needs.

Cheers to ALL of the parents of EEP (PEEP), without your support for your students and your EEP this alterative to education would never work! Also, ALL parents are encouraged to be as involved in the PEEP as possible. Send me a note, visit the PEEP web site or call us and we will get you in touch with several PEEP leaders. You are welcome to join them in helping your EEP!

Cheers to the office staff for their outstanding work last year and to their continued help and efforts this year. You truly make the EEP engine whir with the sounds of success! Thank you Nancy, Amanda, Lupe, Lisa and Randi (in no particular order) YOU are what makes the difference in our students lives and I thank you on their behalf and mine!

Jeers to the EEPsters who made well over 9,000 copies, costing us almost $1800.00, on the student use copy machine in the computer lab. For reference, a normal month is approximately 500 copies so this abuse is grave and has necessitated a change in copier policy. Effect immediately students must ask an EEPC Officer or an office staff member to make copies for them. Copies must be for an academic or other approved school related tasks.

Jeers to me. I apologize for my failed efforts to secure much needed additional campus space for the EEPsters, I know it is often crowded and I appreciate your patience and understanding with the bureaucracy of the school system. I hope that the little used (empty?) and decrepit room next-door that seems perfect for our needs will become available for our use in the future. I will certainly keep you aware of any new progress

Jeers to not having enough space for the students and staff, we hope a remedy is in our future (see above!)

Jeers to not having enough student involvement in this Newsletter. Please submit contributions to the office anytime during the quarter

I look forward to our next PEEP General Meeting, 10:00 am on Sunday December 3rd 2006 at the WPCT Winter test J Set your Outlook computer reminders and mark your calendars!

“All who have meditated on the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth” -- Aristotle 385-322 B.C.

Should any parent want to discuss their child’s performance or if there are any questions or concerns please call the office to schedule a meeting. You may also feel free to call or e-mail me. Have a great quarter!
