We had a special visitor on January 27th Thursday when Columbia grad school student Justin Clark spent several afternoon hours visiting and interviewing the EEPsters for an orticle he is publishing on higher ed for high school students. Justin is working on his doctorate in journalism at Columbia and heard of the EEP from one of our alum (Columbia Law).
We heard from a number of EEP Alum this quarter including, but in no particular order, Tina (Mount Sinai Med) and Tony Nguyen J.D. Columbia, from New York, Ryan Montgomery (pictured in pdf version) from NASA re: the Mars Rover he worked on,. Sunny Yoon (MA, UC Berkeley) a writer/researcher living in Brooklyn, G. J. Echternkamp, a professional commercial actor (yes, you've seen him!), Charys Scotton (University of Pennsylvania Law), Sumanta Pal M.D., UCLA who brought news that EEP alum Nandan Lad M.D., PhD was accepted to the neurosurgery residency program at Stanford, Joann Wang J.D. (Georgetown), Adam Witthuhn who is beginning a career in real estate in the Bay Area, Adam Fraser (UCLA Law/Public Policy) who is on Governor Schwartzeneger's Cabinet, Chris Chien (Chicago Med) on a year-long research adventure in mainland China and Vanessa Sheldon in her second year at the University of Arizona doctoral program in music. We know we missed someone so very soon we will be sending out the first in a long time Alumni Communique to further strenthen our relationships with former EEPsters.

EEP Alum Bruce Ready (2002) has returned from his LDS (Latter Day Saints) mission in Connecticut and has been accepted to a PhD program in engineering and computing sciences at Bringham Young University.
EEP Alum Sherry Wasef (1998) after earning two masters degrees in Public Health and Biochemistry while working in the health care industry has been accepted to a number of medical schools including George Washington University and the Albany School of Medicine.
EEP Alumni Stephen Kovananth and Daniel Rollins were wed this summer to, respectively, Jennifer Ann Hackwith (Stephen) and Mariah Jean Ready (Daniel). Mr. and Mrs. Kovananth and Mr. and Mrs. Ready will undoubtedly be producing the first EEP grandbabies in the future and we all know where these gifted kids of gifted kids will wind up! The Kovananths ceremony was June 20th in San Gabriel and the Ready's was July 10th in Los Angeles. Congratulations EEP Honeymooners!
Alumni contacts this summer include Adam Witthuhn (1998) who is currently in real estate in the Bay area, G. J. Echternkamp (1996) commercial actor and producer, Zhong Tan (2001) J.D., Columbia Law, Jenny "Gia" Cho (1990) J.D. Harvard Law and Alan Romero (2002) Southwestern Law.
EEP alumni Stephen Kovananth and Daniel Rollins who were wed this summer to, respectively, Jennifer Ann Hackwith (Stephen) and Mariah Jean Ready (Daniel) have also just announced that both their lives will be soon enhanced with the birth of babies! EEP generation II will be here on planet Earth very soon! Daniel and Mariah and Stephen and Jennifer have informed the EEP that the are due and will announce births of these two new super-genius children very soon. Congratulations EEP grand-babies.

- Gia Jennifer Cho (JD) from New York back in L.A to get involved in politics on 10-13-04 for an office visit
- Elly Chen (BS) e-mailed in September and is currently working as a Senior Profitability Analysis for Creative Technology, L.A. Her company is an audio-visual production organization responsible for video/projection projects including work for the Oscars and Emmy awards. - Pankit Doshi (JD) wrote in September 2004 with a copy of a recent article featuring him from Newsweek 2003 that noted his distinction as the youngest to attend and graduate from Loyola Law, at 19 and 22 yrs plus his winning the title of Mr. India USA competition in July 2000. Pankit passed the bar in July and works in entertainment law. He is always willing to speak with EEPsters. Email at Group Meetings
- Richard Jones (BA) for an office visit on 10-21-04 now working as a field manager for a contracting company and part-owner in a top accounting firm in Pasadena is planning on his own start-up construction company by 2007
- Verena Firpo (2003, BS) dropped in to report she is back taking classes in preparation for her attendance in 2005 in pharmacy school for the doctorate. She also reports that her brother Daniel Firpo (2003, BS) is currently earning his masters in CS at USC and plans to continue his PhD at Claremont Graduate University in 2007
- Adam Fraser (UCLA Law) sent a note on 10-08-04 telling us that he will graduate this Spring with a JD and Masters of Public Policy en route to a job in management consulting with McKinsey and Company. He has offered to advise EEPsters by writing adam.fraser@gmail.com
- Vanessa Sheldon (PhD) wrote to us in September 2004 regarding finishing her dissertation and seeking Music Prof work back home in Southern California. We know a great place for a new EEPster to teach!
- We heard through the alum network that Rebekah Viola (2000, BA) has been accepted to Georgetown Law School for Fall 2005 and Jacob Lister (1997, BA) has been accepted to George Washington Law School, Fall 2005
- James Walker (MS) was featured in the CSLA publication Cea Crest Quarterly for his departmental achievements in hydrology and his future work in environmental consulting.
- Sherry Wasef M.S, M.P.H. (George Washington Med) wrote in to say "hi" and "Merry Christmas" from the cold confines of Washington D.C
- Tim Weisbrod (1990) wrote in from Maryland with greetings and queries about the new PEEP sponsored database site. We look forward to hearing more from Tim soon
- Leana Wen (Univ. Washington @ St Louis Med) was featured in The New Physician (October 2003) participating in R&R as a cultural-arts dancer to relieve the stress of her 4th year med school duties.

EEP Grandbaby!! Daniel Rollins and wife had a son named Ethan Daniel Rollins born on Sunday October 23rd 2005. Baby Rollins weighed in at 8lbs 4oz and was 21inches in length. The EEP family grows even outside our normal recruitment efforts! We congratulate the entire Rollins and Ready families on a new brilliant future EEP candidate!
EEP alumni Mr Hank Wang has some temporary part-time openings in his firm for an EEPster with some level of interest in finances, taxes and B&E. Must have completed first year Accounting courses.

- Alina Gharabegian M.A visited on Wednesday October 26th and is a member of the first class of EEPsters ever! Alina entered EEP in 1984 at age 14 and graduated at 19 in 1989, up to that point the EEP had only one student who was admitted in 1983. Alina is currently at NYU working on doctorate in literature and is an English teacher at Queens College. More alum advice from an O.E (original EEPster!)
- Susan Ngo, financial analyst, notary public and CFA level III candidate is a UCLA Anderson School of Management Riordan Fellows Program scholar.
- Stephen Liu and Philip Tseng both at the Roseland Franklin Grad School and Medicine College in Chicago stopped by in September during Catalina to say "hi"
- Daniel Tamae working on his PhD at the City of Hope Beckman Research Inst. Graduate program visited on 9-28-05. For alum advice:
- Suzanne Vega J.D visited on 10-13-05 then again at the WPCT on December 4th with fellow alum Adam Fraser J.D, M.P.P.
- Jeremy Weatherby working on his thesis for MA in Theology from Tyndale Theological Seminar in Badhoevedrop, Netherlands sent us an e-mail in October.
Vanessa Sheldon PhD EEP Alumnus held a world premiere of her original work, "A Poem from Harp to Piano" presented at the CSULA State Playhouse on Monday March 6th. Vanessa is an internationally re-known harpist and is a faculty member at College of the Canyons, in Santa Clarita.

- Vanessa Sheldon Ph. D (2002) also stopped by the Lounge on Monday March 6th with former PEEPster volunteer Mom Julie E. that afternoon to say "hi" before her presentation at the playhouse. Vanessa is an alum mentor volunteer so if you are interested in communicating with her stop by the office.
- Stephen Khovananth M.S welcomed son Conner into the world on February 9th 2005. He was 20 inches, 7lbs. 9 oz. Stephen and Jennifer will take Connor on a family move to their new home in Bethesda, Maryland in Summer 06. Stephen is working for a private firm supporting the Defense Intelligence Agency after a lengthy prestigious career as a Naval officer.
- Claudia Hsieh M.D sent a greeting in March while completing her residency in Whittier.
- Jackie Kao M.S was accepted to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania
- Mark Gordon, J.D is helping EEPsters develop their pre-law based Mock Trial Club
- Bryce Ready (BYU) published his second paper on video mosaics said "hi" from Utah

- Dr. Claudia Hsieh M.D. (1999) wrote to say "hi" and will begin her Internship at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier. Claudia graduated from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2005.
- Dr. Masha Levhits M.D, PhD (2000) will begin her residency at UCLA in the fall and graduated from University of Washington at St Louis.
- Dr. Chris Chien M.D (2000) is back in L.A to begin his residency at Cedar Sinai this summer after finishing his medical degree at Chicago School of Medicine. He and fellow alum Marc Gayed (2003) visited in June.
- Marc Gayed (2002) (DDS 2007) visited the Lounge and the students on Wednesday June 7th. Marc will spend part of his final year in dental school in rural Jamaica helping to heal underprivileged teeth!
- Siraj Giabani (2005) was accepted to medical school at George Washington, Roseland Franklin Chicago School of Medicine and will begin his studies at Penn State in the Fall.
- Hank Wang (1997) business-owner has been nominated for the 2006 Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business Award by Susan Ngo (2001).
- Alex Carlton (1998) and Joanne Lee (Elder/Grad) were featured at the Tutorial Center's 2006 Student Staff Recognition & Tutor Certification Ceremony on March 30th.
- Daniel Tamae (2000) who is currently a doctoral student and researcher for the Beckman Group at City of Hope participated in the CSLA's Career Center's Career Fair event on April 6th.
- Dr. Aradhna Tripati PhD (1997) a Cambridge scholar was back in L.A to visit the family, friends and stopped by the EEP lounge Friday June 9th to say "hi". Aradhna noted, "EEPsters seems taller these days so you must be feeding them better!" She was the keynote speaker at the annual CSLA Geology banquet June 11, 2006.
- Dr. Vanessa Sheldon PhD (2002), at 19 was the youngest college professor in the U.S as noted in the press release from the PR department. Vanessa began work at the College of the Canyons as an adjunct faculty member in the Music Department last fall.
- Charys Scotton J.D (2003) wrote with news of finishing law school at University of Pennsylvania and accepted a position at Morgan, Lewis, and Bockius for the Fall. Charys also served as the president of the Black Law Student Association at U Penn.
- Laurie Kaye M.S (2005) Graduated from UCLA School of Public Policy in June with a Master's in Urban Planning and has accepted a position at Environmental Defense.
- Katherine Chuang (2005) is completing the Master's in Computer Science (CS) at UCLA while her brother Michael is completing his Master's degree in CS at USC!
- Jackie Kao (2002) is attending Optometry School in Pennsylvania
- Dr Stephanie Spehar PhD (1997) Fresh from earning her doctorate at NYU and prior to heading out to China to continue her research on Spider Monkeys, attended the WPCT parent meeting and answered many questions.

- Helen Nieman competed in the Tao Li Cup Chinese Dance competition in China before going to work in Taipei as the personal assistant to the CEO at Taidoc industries. She is applying to law school for the fall of 2007
- Bibhu Mohanty won a Howard Hughes scholarship for $25,000 and is attending Duke School of Medicine.
- Bryce Ready M.S is engaged to wed Ms. Camilla Thomas with nuptials planned for January 2007. Bryce, who e-mailed us, is finishing his graduate degree in computing sciences at Brigham Young University. An EEP congratulation to the happy couple and we welcome Camilla to the EEP family!
- Charys Scotton J.D visited EEP for lunch with the Director and two EEP Elders interested in law. After graduating from University of Pennsylvania School of Law she announced her recent engagement; Charys and her fiancé are purchasing a house and will work near D.C. More EEP congratulations and we welcome the hubby-to-be to our EEP family.
- Mahmoud Traina M.D stopped by the office with gifts from Libya that he picked up on a recent visit
- Justin Wu M.S who earned his Masters Comp science from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) sent us an invitation to his commencement exercises.
EEP Alum Leana Wen was the first CSU alumnus to be awarded a Rhodes scholarship from Oxford University . Additionally, Leana is also the president of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), which has chapters nationwide to support students interested in the medical field.Leana was also featured in numerous papers including the L.A Times and the national University magazine Winter 06 edition.
Susan Ngo emailed Rich to check in and give him an update on her life and application to business school. She has recently spent some time at the Wharton School in Pennsylvania and was also invited to attend a diversity weekend at Stanford. She was also in training for L.A. 's first half-marathon, which took place in December.
Paul Gowder (J.D. Harvard Law) sent an email telling us that he has recently left the practice of law in Oregon and has reestablished himself as a student in the PhD program in Political Science at Stanford University .
Rex Cheng stopped by the Lounge to visit around Thanksgiving while he was on vacation from Duke School of Medicine where he is currently studying.
Harry Budisidharta visited the Lounge on January 3rd to see Rich and to check in on the student body (Harry is a former EEPC President and current law school student in Colorado )
February 8th saw the first ever EEP-related film premier when EEP alum, commercial actor and director GJ Echternkamp'96 first full length feature film, "Frank and Cindy, a documentary" premiered at the Fine Arts Theater on Wilshire in Beverly Hills 9:00pm to midnight. We heard shortly thereafter that it was a huge success and GJ hopes that a cable distribution deal is in the works, perhaps through Showtime. We will alert everyone through e-mail when it is picked-up for general television viewing. Congratulations GJ!!
More Late Breaking News sent in e-mail on 3-22-07 about GJ's film. This American Life (!) will be airing an entire TV episode about GJ and the film: April 12th, at 10:30pm on Showtime with repeats throughout the week. - Susan Ngo'02 sent a note telling us she is actively visiting business schools including Wharton and Stanford awaiting news on admission soon and just competed in the L.A. Marathon. Susan has been accepted to Cornell's MBA program with a $20,000 scholarship!
- Paul Gowder'98 (J.D. Harvard Law) sent an email telling us that he has recently left the practice of law in Oregon and has reestablished himself as a student in a doctoral program in Political Science at Stanford University.
We are proud and happy to again announce that EEP alum Leana Wen currently a 5th year med student at Washington University at St Louis was selected as one of only 32 Americans nationally chosen for a Rhodes Scholarship and she will begin her studies at Oxford in the fall. Leana who is also the national president of AMSA (American Medical Student Association) accomplished much while an EEPster and was accepted with scholarships in 2001to several medical schools including Baylor, Cornell, Sloan-Kettering, Stanford and Vanderbilt. She was one of only five students selected from California for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship named after famed British philanthropist Cecil B. Rhodes.

- Kimberly Chuang spending a year of study abroad at Oxford was selected as an illustrator for Oxford's student magazine Isis. Isis is the World's oldest student magazine
- Andrew Jick, in addition to graduating, was selected to intern with the prestigious Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) as well as being selected to intern at Bet Tzedek Services of Hollywood. Both these selective law organizations serve low -income persons with legal assistance. Go Andrew. He chose LAFLA by the way!

- Laura Petersen, in addition to graduating, presented research /participated in the Western Psychological Association (WPA) conference in Vancouver, Canada
- EEP alum Leana Wen A Rhodes Scholar in 2007, was the winner of the New York Times Essay competition wining an all expense paid trip to Africa.

Andrew Jick EEP 2008 Graduate - has been accepted to Law schools at Georgetown, Cornell, Univ. of Virginia (with full scholarship) and UC Berkeley's Boalt School of Law; he has also been accepted to hometown favorites UCLA and USC. He has been put on "wait" lists at Harvard, Columbia, Chicago and Duke, and has yet to hear from Stanford or NYU. He should hear back from these schools by mid-April. Congratulations Andrew!!

- Kate (Neilson) Fitzpatrick - Had lunch with Rich on 2/11/2008 to discuss her current projects and plans. We wish her continued success. Kate was a guest speaker at the annual BIL conference http://bilconference.com/ in Early March she spoke on the state of gifted education.

- Paisley Kadison - Contacted us on 2/11/08 to tell us she was accepted to the M.Acc Masters Program at Leventhal School at USC, her program is ranked at #5 nationally Congratulations!!! Paisley then begins law school shortly thereafter.
- Richard "Rico" Jones - Had lunch with Rich on 2/25/2008 and announced he was planning an Alumni Association to help support the Program.
- Owynn Lancaster - Popped into the EEP office on 3/4/08 to say hello. He will be teaching KIN101T (Judo) at CSLA next quarter, with Owynn as an instructor teacher, it should be an AWESOME class. :)
- Ron Masson - En route to med school in Vermont dropped by the EEP to say hello and offer "helpful" advice to EEPsters.
- Justin Padilla B.S EEP Alum - living in Burbank, has a great job, has tons of friends, and is enjoying the single life reports Rich after an e-mail discussion with Justin.
- Andrew Post - Finished first semester at USC Gould School of Law. He loves law school and he says, "USC is the place for EEPsters to [go to law school]." He says he is always willing to give students considering UCLA the "Trojan perspective." :) He also is an excellent poker player and won the USC Law poker tournament against alumni and a professor. All proceeds went to charity. Go POST!!!!

EEP Alumna Susan Ngo recently emailed Rich to check in and give him an update on her life. She is currently working for Deloitte as a Senior Consultant.
EEP Alum Edwin Peng recently emailed Rich to let him know that in a few weeks he will be leaving California to attend graduate school. We wish Edwin the best of luck. Edwin dropped by the office on December 12th to detail his grad school plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin as a fully funded doctoral student. His department in Mechanical Engineering is ranked 10th in the nation. Edwin also told us he was accepted to six of seven grad schools he applied to this year, wow!

- EEP Alum Brandon Pancost has graduated from UCLA with a MS in computer science. He just got back from an International conference in Tokyo where he presented his Master's research paper. - EEP alumna Eleanor Chen has been accepted to the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. She is very excited about getting her MBA, and before she starts school in late August, she will be visiting Thailand and backpacking through Europe, making the most of her time and celebrating her last debt-free days!!
- Alum John Chin was asked to join a traveling Julliard performance group as a visiting pianist. John was asked to apply for Julliard's professional degree called an Artist Diploma that is basically a working band that represents Juilliard on tour, on the radio etc etc.
- EEP Alum Michael Kovshilovsky completed his first Medical school Board exam. Congratulations!
- EEP Alum Harry Budisidharta opened the Attorney at Law Office of Harry Budisidharta, L.L.C. in December 2008.
- EEP Alumna Natasha Spottiswoode won the $5000 National Phi Kappa Phi National Fellowship (Andrew Jick was last year's recipient).
